Mumtaz is a village girl whose family is killed in communal riots. She moves to Mumbai with her uncle, the only family member she has left. They are desperately poor and her uncle persuades her to become a bar girl at Chandni Bar. This is merely temporary, he promises, until he gets a job. Mumtaz is a shy girl who loathes the work, but she forces herself to dance and flirt. However, the uncle doesn't keep his promise; he lives on her earnings, drinking them away, and never gets a job. He adds one final, unforgivable crime to the list when he gets drunk and rapes her. By this time she has caught the eye of a gangster called Potiya Sawant. When she tells Potiya what her uncle did to her, Potiya decides to "defend her honor." Potiya shoots the uncle. Mumtaz, bereft of any male protection in the dangerous slums, marries Potiya. She is determined to make the best of things. She leaves the bar and stays home to raise her two children, whom she carefully protects from the world of prostitution and gangs. However, her world unravels again when Potiya is killed. She has to return to the bar to support her children. In the end, she cannot protect them from their sordid surroundings. Her son becomes a killer, her daughter becomes a bar dancer in her turn, and Mumtaz turns to prostitution in a tragic attempt to save her son. more»

Vijay is the managing director of a large shipping corporation. He lives in a joint family with his father (Nambiar), two brothers (Radharavi and Dhamu), their wives and children and a spinster sister (Bhanupriya). He goes to Switzerland to stipulate a contract with Nizhalgal Ravi and Raghuvaran. There he meets Rambha, Ravi's sister. The two fall in love. Ravi approves of Vijay but when he expresses the condition that Vijay should stay with them after the marriage because India is not good, he refuses his offer and returns home. But later Raghuvaran and Rambha travel to India to mend fences. Raghuvaran learns that Bhanupriya had been dumped by Ravi for a better life and Vijay is just waiting for an opportunity to kill the man who destroyed his sister's life. He devises ways of preventing Ravi from attending the marriage but later he tells Bhanupriya the truth. Vijay overhears this and is angered, but Raghuvaran solves all the problems by deciding to marry Bhanupriya. Bhanupriya agrees for this too, making everyone happy. Ex-pilot Vikram Madaan is an aircraft maintenance officer at the Chandigarh airport. Years ago his wife was killed by hijackers when she was traveling on a flight piloted by him. She is on a flight from Delhi to Amritsar with her teacher when the plane in which she is flying is hijacked by terrorists. The hijackers demand the release of Rashid Omar, their accomplice or else the hostages will be killed. The flight is forced to land at Chandigarh airport for refuelling before taking off to Dubai.
