Nakli Nawab begins, more or less, at a mushaira where a trio of siblings Nawab Sharafat Ali (KN Singh), his younger brother Shaukat Ali (Ashok Kumar) and their burqa-clad sister Shabnam (Shakila) make a late entry. While the men are greeted effusively and seated in the front row, Shabnam slips away into the zenana. There are a few laughs at the mushaira, thanks to the comic poet Shaiza (Munshi Munaqqa), who discovers too late that he s misplaced the ghazal he d penned for the gathering. In his absence while he s gone off to retrieve the paper from his house nearby Shaiza s nephew, a pickpocket named Baadshah (Maruti), passes off Shaiza s ghazal (which he d purloined before the mushaira) as his own. This isn t great shaayari, so just about anything that comes after this is bound to be appreciated. As it happens, the next poet up and the last of the evening is Nawab Sharafat Ali himself, who reads out a sher ridiculing love. He is greeted with much praise and is looking pleased with himself when Baadshah s equally unscrupulous friend Yusuf (Manoj Kumar) challenges him. Nawab Sahib is annoyed, but the rules of the mushaira are democratic: if this man wishes to recite a poem, he is welcome to. So Yusuf goes up on stage and sings in praise of love, which brings a yearning dreaminess into Shabnam s eyes. more»

The story begins with Balu (Naveen) who drops out of engineering college but then he is handsome, smart and well mannered. He has father who is quite friendly but a teacher mother (Sudha) who is quite strict. Life goes on for Balu until he meets Priya (Pavani) who happens to be the daughter of the very influential and rich Indira Devi (Asha Saini), the industrialist. Nirmala (played by Nargis) is in love with Barrister Rajindra Singh (played by Pradeep Kumar) and they have plans to get married soon. But Nirmala's aunt is jealous to see her happiness and hence wants to marry her off to an uneducated villager. The dispute turns big and Nirmala leaves her home. She takes a job in a dancing school, which turns out to be a front for a brothel. This lands her in prison, but she is not found guilty. When she returns home, she is turned away, and knowing about her shocks and kills her mom. Again out on the streets, she attempts to find work. Pandit Kedarnath (played by Pran), a pimp, is now following her in order to get her for himself. But coincidentally, she meets Rajindra again. The lovers get married secretly. But then Rajindra leaves for Britain, leaving behind pregnant Nirmala. Rajindra's parents don't accept Nirmala and her child and throw her out. Nirmala gives birth to a baby boy. Her conditions worsen and she is not able to earn her living. She hence gives away her son to Dr. Renuka Roy, a kind woman, and goes into prostitution for earning money. The story turns when her son grows old to become a Public Prosecutor and his first case is of Nirmala, a prostitute, who is now charged with a murder. more»
