Madhavan (Mammootty), a simple village man who in childhood got bitten by the film bug, threw up his studies and finally ends up as 'Operator' Madhavan, who tours the countryside with his 16 mm projector and shows films at temple festivals and other public functions. Madhavan's family consist of his wife (Padmapriya) and a daughter (Sanusha). (Innocent) enacts the role of a priest. Madhavan comes across a six-year-old boy (Yash) who is displaced from his native Gujarat and separated from his family after the devastating earthquake. This boy was taken into a gang of beggars from where he manages to escape. Madhavan takes the boy home and cares for him, just like a son. He and his Family takes a fondness for the boy, later finding out that legally he cannot adopt the boy. The boy is taken away from Madhavan to a juvenile home and allegations of ill treatment is charged on Madhavan, but soon dismissed. The issue gets media coverage. Madhavan then goes to Gujarat with the boy in hopes of finding his family or adopting him. At the disaster camp in Gujarat Madhavan understands that the boys relatives are all most probably dead but due to legal hurdles, the boy must stay on in the hope that his real parents might be traced. Shekhara Menon (Thilakan) is retired income tax officer from Mumbai and has now settled in a remote village in Kerala. He owns some land and a house where he and his three daughters live together and lead a calm, silent and happy life. Mr. Menon's Pension from service has been blocked due to some unclear issues. Hareendran (Mammootty) is a struggling small-time contractor and comes in as a new tenant to the rented house. Hareendran is constantly put under unwanted troubles by his aide Balachandran (Sudheesh), who convinces Hareendran to help people in trouble. His experience with Balachandran has made Hareendran a selfish man and he presently is least concerned about other people's problems around him. But the things take a change after Menon goes absconding leaving three daughters alone in the house. Hareendran the selfish tenant quickly decides to vacate the house to avoid unwanted troubles. Even though selfish and unkind outside, the good-hearted Hareendran cannot stand the harsh difficulties forced to be faced by the girls in front of his house and rest of the story is about how only Hareendran (Oral Mathram - the only person) steps up to help the girls. more»

Bahurani features the story of a landlord who has two sons Raghu, by his first wife, and Vikram, by his second wife. Raghu is a simple-minded and innocent young man. Vikram is cruel, domineering, selfish and greedy. Also, he ill-treats everyone, from servants to his own brother Raghu. Likewise, his mother too is equally cruel to people around her. One day, Vikram has a fight with the Padma, who becomes the first person to ever confront him. Seeing this, the landlord decides to get Vikram married to the Padma. But Vikram refuses and after a series of incidents the Padma is married to Raghu, who she soon realizes is mistreated by her family members. Filled with rage, she stands up for him and defends him, thus making Raghu gain some confidence to fight for himself.
