They are poor and his mother has to mortgage her house in the village in order to send Kamal to the city for further education. She expects him to pay off the mortgage once he gets a job. Kamal gets a job and returns to the village with a wife Mona (Shyama), who is considered too modern for the village. When Kamal returns to the city, he stops sending money to his family. The mother and daughter leave for the city when they are informed that Kamal is not well. They are treated badly by Mona, who with her spendthrift habits gets into arguments with Kamal. When Kamal leaves for a job outside the city, Mona has Shanta and Sharda thrown out of the house.\n\nWandering on the streets, Shanta and Sharda collide with Kumar's (Manoj Kumar) car, who takes them to his home. Kamal is an employee of Kumar, but the fact is unknown to mother and daughter. Kumar and Sharda start liking each other and he insists that they stay at his place till the mother recovers. When Kamal returns home, he is upset to see his mother and sister missing. He leaves some money he is carrying for his employer with Mona, and goes off to the village to look for them, but is unable to find them. Mona spends three-fourths of the money Kamal had left in her care, and he has to find a way to return the money. Finally, Kamal unites with his mother and sister; Mona has learned her lesson from her errant ways, and Kumar and Sharda get married.\n\nThere is a sub-plot in the form of Kamal and Mona's neighbours; one is Sunder (Mehmood) and his wife Geeta (Savitri), who is shown as the traditional wife in comparison to Mona. But on the night of marriage Shyam is not only accused of a safe break but also death of Kamini (Snehlata), and forced to join the criminals in a spate of robberies after one of which there is a showdown between him and the rest, and he manages to escape and lands in a town where he saves a young girl, Meena (Nazima) from a group of hooligans, who then forces him to come to her house for first aid treatment. Meena is the daughter of an honest cop, Constable Ram Singh (Pran) who instantly adopts him (now called Mohan) as his son. Notwithstanding continuity jerks; now all actions (murders, rapes, gold smuggling) and characters find themselves in the same town. And the lecherous Deepak in partnership with Jamna Das is the kingpin of all unlawful activities even though DIG Gopal Das is honesty personified. In the swiftly changing scenario, the old lovers get reunited, songs and dances in flashback follow, Shyam/Mohan finds out Kamini is alive, after some fisticuffs he is arrested, Ram Singh gets promoted as Sub-Inspector, but in a chase to prevent Deepak/Jamna Das's consignment with gold he falls prey to the former's bullet. DIG Gopal Das gets him cremated with full honors, vowing to get the culprit booked. Jamna Das agrees to marry off Sapna to Deepak to consolidate his nefarious activities but Shyam/Mohan spoils the party leading to a showdown between the partners. Not only that, he also convinces the DIG about his son's doing, how he had been hoodwinked into the aiding them, and brings him to the scene of action where the party is in a confessional mode. Pandiya is a young man who leads a troubled life. He is continuously being chased by Marudhu (a look-alike of him) and Marudhu's boss Kabali, who would be given a lot of money if they killed Pandiya. However Pandiya's elder brother Shankar, a scientist finds out about everything and agrees to help. Just then, the real Pandiya steps in, revealing that two fisherman saved him from drowning and hell breaks loose.
